About Freddie Gilroy:

Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers is a poignant bronze sculpture created by artist Ray Lonsdale. Located on Scarborough’s North Bay seafront, the statue commemorates Freddie Gilroy, a former soldier who was among the first to liberate the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during World War II.

The artwork portrays Gilroy seated on a bench, capturing his quiet reflection and the weight of his experiences. It serves as a powerful tribute to the bravery and humanity of those who fought in the war and the resilience of Holocaust survivors. The sculpture has become a cherished landmark, inviting contemplation and remembrance.
